After qualifying as an electrician in Seville (Spain), Rafael Guzmán Amo started a B.A (English) at the University of Seville, which he completed at the University of Limerick (Ireland) as an Erasmus student in 1998. He also completed a Grad.Dip. in Software Localisation at the same university in 1999 and an MSc in 2005, sponsored by the Localisation Research Centre (LRC).

Professional experience
From 1999 to 2005, Rafa Guzmán worked in the LRC researching in different areas of software localisation and teaching.

Rafa was involved in a number of related EU projects run by the LRC. He delivered several e-learning courses, and set up and coordinated the LRC Localisation Technology Laboratory and Showcase (LOTS), attracting the donation of a large number of software localisation tools from companies based in the US, Europe, and Asia.

Rafa has been invited to give talks and courses on localisation tools in the US, Spain, Fance and Ireland.

He has also worked as a tutor (Dublin City University, Ireland) and Web master. He has been involved in the organisation of a number of international localisation conferences, seminars, and summer schools run by the LRC.

Rafa has written articles on localisation-related topics as well as localisation tools reviews in well-known publications, such as Multilingual Computing, Translation Journal, and Localisation Focus.

In 2005, Rafa joined Symantec Corporation, where he has worked since then as a project lead, senior language coordinator, terminologist, and researcher. He is the main linguist working on Spanish Machine Translation (MT) and terminology. He has successfully led several innovation initiatives such as the automatic conversion of the the Brazilian old spelling to the new spelling and the automatic conversion of Brazilian into Iberian Portuguese content. His main research interests include linguistic quality and automation techniques for both MT post-editing and terminology management.

Rafa is the developer of T-Manager Terminology Tool. Occasionally, he provides training in software localisation tools, via e-learning courses organised by Austin Community College (Austin, Texas).

Since 2006, Rafa has promoted and organised a Dublin Localisation Interest Group.

In his free time, Rafa does a little bit of creative writing. He also helps in a youth club in Dublin.
